The Thanksgiving Address: Ancient, Sacred Words of Gratitude for Mother Earth

You’re invited to experience the Thanksgiving Address: Greetings to the Natural World.

These ancient words come to us from the Native people known as the Haudenosaunee (also referred to as the Iroquois or Six Nations – Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora) in upstate New York and Canada.

The Address is based on the belief that a spiritual communication of thankfulness and acknowledgement of all living things must be given to align the minds and hearts of the people with Nature. This is spoken at the beginning and end of ceremonial and governmental gatherings held by the Six Nations.

I first experienced the power of the Thanksgiving Address 30 years ago.

I was part of a small group that volunteered to help build the Akwesasne Freedom School, which is dedicated to keeping the Mohawk language alive on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation and beyond.

We were the honored guests in a ceremony of thanks. We were all given a little booklet with the Thanksgiving Address printed in both English and Mohawk. The whole experience profoundly impacted me, and continues to today.

The Thanksgiving Address is intended to be shared by all people, Native and non-Native, to help us rediscover our balance, respect, and oneness with Nature. How does its message resonate within you?
