We all know the importance of self-care. So, how are you doing on that front?
Maybe you’re a working mom that forgets to eat lunch. Or sits too long at a desk. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom that forgets to take a shower. Or brush your teeth. Maybe you don’t have children and work crazy long hours, getting very little sleep. Maybe you’re caring for an aging parent and have put your dreams on hold.
(Of course, men can struggle with self-care too. I just have personal experience with all of the above!)
And, most of us don’t drink enough water. Had to throw that one in there. (As I pause to take a drink.)
Yes, we know we need to put our own oxygen mask on first before assisting others. But, it can generate even more stress hearing that. Over and over again.
So, let’s use our time wisely, and deepen the connection to our natural wisdom as we strive to improve our self-care. Here’s a simple concept that provides powerful results.
Call on the Elements. Earth. Air. Fire. Water. Identify four things you’ll do for yourself that are inspired from the Elements. Set the intention that these things will be both nurturing to you and connect you with nature. This could be a daily list or a weekly list. Whichever feels right to you.
Some examples:
Earth – Pot up a plant. Stand with your feet firmly on the ground and breathe. Enjoy a delicious meal that includes root vegetables.
Air – Watch bird behavior. Observe trees swaying in the wind. Listen to the rustling of leaves.
Fire – Drink something warm and comforting. Light a candle and gaze softly into the flame. Listen to the crackling of logs.
Water – Enjoy a hot shower or bath. Spend time by a river, wetland, lake or ocean. Take a walk in the rain.
When you’re taking each action be mindful that this act of self-care was inspired by the particular Element. Take a couple moments to reflect on how that Element is present in your life, day-to-day, hour-by-hour. As your action draws to an end extend gratitude to the Element that inspired you.
You’ll soon realize that wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, you’re always connected to nature, and the infinite number of ways it can help us better care for ourselves.
What are your favorite Element-inspired self-care actions?
